Insomnia is a condition that covers a number of sleep disorders. However, not all sleep disorders are characterized by the inability to doze off and remain asleep throughout the night. At the Chicago Insomnia Diagnostic facility, exhausted individuals are being tested and advised.

The first appointment at the clinic entails an evaluation. A physical check-up is conducted and a medical history taken. Physiological reasons must be ruled out as the cause of insomnia. When a full assessment is complete the process of monitoring sleeping patterns can start.

It may be stress related and that would explain why the client clenches his teeth while asleep. Restless leg syndrome is frequently found to be the causative factor. Sleep apnea is a serious disorder. The individual has lapses in breathing for brief periods of time. Often this monitoring discloses the condition for the first time.

Narcolepsy is a brain disorder that is not understood by the medical community. The afflicted individual, exhausted by the lack of rest, will suddenly fall asleep in the middle of a conversation or during a meal at a restaurant. From one second to the next, she is sound asleep.

In addition to the excessive sleepiness during the day it is typified by a sudden loss of muscle tone. This loss is called cataplexy. It can be triggered by an unexpected emotional response to something.

Sleepwalking is a behavior that is sometimes viewed humorously in cartoons. It involves the person walking around and engaging in activities such as eating large quantities of food. Often non-edible things are consumed. Some examples are coffee grounds or cigarettes. This is an example of both a sleeping and an eating disorder.

An overnight observation is conducted at the clinic to determine the cause of any one of these disorders. They are found in women more often than men. Unless resolved, insomnia can lead to dangerous episodes. In rare cases the individual may drive a car while asleep.
