Most of the treatment for acne works by reducing quantity of oil that is produced, inflammation of the skin, speeding up turnover of skin cells or fighting infection by bacteria. Light based therapies are known to bring a lot of success. This therapy targets bacteria that cause acne inflammation. There are forms of light therapy which are able to be done in the office of the doctor. Blue light therapy is able to be done from home by a hand held device. Some of the side effects include temporary redness, pain and sensitivity to light.

The procedure known as chemical peel makes use of repeated application of chemical solutions like salicylic acid. This mode of treatment will be most effective when it gets combined with other forms of treatment. They are not recommended for persons taking oral retinoids because there will be oral medications.

Dermatologists could use some special tools for removal of blackheads and whiteheads gently. These are those that may not have been cleared by topical medications. One may experience scarring but such scars can be handled in various ways.
